Smart Paste (Beta)

Fill the empty fields of a web form in Chrome with answers you saved in Stash for Mac. Press one shortcut, pick a profile, review the form.

⌃⌘A·empty fields only·never submits

Empty fields only. When it is not sure, it leaves the box blank. How matching works →

How it works

Three steps. You stay in control.

Save your answers once in Stash for Mac. Keep more than one profile, such as personal and business. Then use them on any form in Chrome.

Step 01

Press ⌃⌘A in a form

Click into a field of a web form in Chrome. Press Control-Command-A.

Step 02

Pick a profile

Stash for Mac asks which saved profile to fill with. Nothing is filled until you choose one.

Step 03

Review, then submit

Stash fills the empty fields it can match. It never submits the form. You check it and submit it yourself.

The first time, Chrome asks to let Stash “communicate with cooperating native applications”. That native application is the Stash app on your own Mac. Click Allow once.

Changed your mind? Click the Stash icon in Chrome’s toolbar and choose Undo Smart Paste (Beta). Undo puts back the fields it changed and keeps any edits you made afterwards.

What it does

Fills the blanks. Leaves the rest.

Smart Paste is a Beta. When it is not sure which answer belongs in a box, it leaves that box empty rather than guess.

Fills

What it fills

  • Empty fields only, with answers from the profile you picked
  • Name, email, phone, address, company and the other answers you saved
  • Checkboxes, only after you approve those changes separately
  • Card boxes that a checkout loads from a payment provider’s secure frame. Stash asks your permission the first time it needs that frame.
Never

What it never does

  • Submit the form
  • Change a field you already filled in
  • Read what you have already typed
  • Fill anything before you choose a profile
  • Read or change your clipboard
Security & privacy

Your profiles never leave your Mac.

People save card numbers, addresses and birthdays in Smart Paste, so here is exactly how that information is kept.

AES-256-GCM · Keychain

How your profiles are stored

  • Local only. Your profiles are saved on your Mac’s own drive, in Stash’s folder. There is no cloud copy.
  • Encrypted. They are encrypted with AES-256-GCM before they are written to disk.
  • The key stays on this Mac. The encryption key is kept in your Mac’s Keychain, locked to this device and usable only while your Mac is unlocked. It is never synced to iCloud and never sent anywhere.
  • Never on our servers. Stash has no copy of your profiles. Our servers never touch your private data, including card numbers.

What is sent to match fields

To decide which saved answer belongs in which field, Stash sends Jev, an AI service operated by TypeSafe, a description of the form through Stash’s server:

  • The form’s field labels and names, section captions and the page heading
  • The names of your saved-answer categories, such as “Work email”

What is never sent

  • Your saved answers themselves. If one appears in a label, it is replaced with “[omitted]” first.
  • Fields for payment cards, card security codes, passwords, bank accounts, Social Security numbers, passports and driver’s licenses

Stash’s server does not store or log the form description or Jev’s answer. Read the full Smart Paste privacy details →

FAQ

Common questions about Smart Paste.

Does Smart Paste submit the form for me?
No. It fills the empty fields it can match and stops. You review the form and submit it yourself.
Are my saved answers sent to an AI?
No. Stash sends Jev, an AI service operated by TypeSafe, the form’s field labels and the names of your answer categories. Your saved answers are never sent. Fields for payment cards, passwords, bank accounts, Social Security numbers, passports and driver’s licenses are never sent at all. See the extension privacy policy.
What is Jev, and how does Smart Paste use it?
Jev is a decision model made by TypeSafe. Unlike a chatbot, it cannot write text. It can only choose from a short list of answers it is given, and it reports how sure it is about each one. Smart Paste asks it one question per box on a form: which of your saved answer categories belongs here, if any? Stash describes the box (its label, caption and the page heading) and lists your categories by name, such as “Work email” or “Home address”, plus “none of these”. Jev returns a probability for every option. Stash fills the box only when Jev is at least 70% sure and its top choice is well ahead of the next one. Otherwise the box stays empty. Boxes that already say exactly what they want, such as a standard email field, are matched on your Mac without asking Jev at all. Jev never sees your saved answers and cannot put anything into a form. It returns the name of a category, and the Stash app on your Mac fills in the value. The question passes through Stash’s server on its way to Jev, and that server does not store or log it.
Why did it leave a field empty?
Because it was not sure. Smart Paste is a Beta. When it cannot tell which saved answer belongs in a box, it leaves the box empty rather than guess.
How do I undo a fill?
Click the Stash icon in Chrome’s toolbar and choose Undo Smart Paste (Beta). It puts back the fields it changed and keeps any edits you made afterwards.
Why does Chrome ask about “cooperating native applications”?
That is how the extension talks to the Stash app on your Mac. Click Allow once. The connection stays on your computer.
